In my practice, we see a lot of people that are going through what I would call a high conflict custody case. High conflict cases are marked by great difficulties in communication. Potentially issues of domestic violence. High conflict cases can also involve a parent withholding the child from the other parent.
Even in high conflict cases, the court expects parents to be able to prioritize the child. This means looking out for the child's well-being so they're insulated from any type of difficulties that the parents are having with the relationship or over the custody schedule.
